Google recently added a Gemini button to the web and Android version of its popular email service, Gmail. When web users click on this button, the tech giant’s chatbot enables users to get updates about a specific project, check unread emails and even suggest a reply when prompted. The company is reportedly planning to bring similar functionalities to the Gemini button for Gmail’s Android app.
Last month, the company promised deeper integration of its AI chatbot Gemini into its popular collaborative suite of services during its annual developer conference, Google I/O 2024 and Gmail is one of them. The chatbot is also set to replace Google Assistant as the default digital assistant. Moreover, the button’s role within the Gmail app is also expanding significantly.
Gemini button on Gmail’s Android app
According to a report by Android Authority, Google started testing a new Gemini button in the Gmail Android app (version 2024.05.19.635289964) in May. The company also allowed beta testers to activate this button and explore its functions by tweaking some flags. Now, Google has released the 2024.05.26.638440827 version of the Gmail app on Android which comes with some noteworthy updates to the button’s functionality.
What the latest changes mean for users
Earlier, Gmail for Android added a “summarise this email” button below the email’s subject line, which had a limited function. The newly introduced star-shaped Gemini button, located next to the archive button, broadens the scope of tasks that users can perform and goes beyond just summarising emails.
As per the screenshots shared by the report, Google has refined the user interface for the Gemini button. The button now offers new quick prompts such as “Summarise this email,” “List the next steps,” and “Suggest a reply.”
Apart from the suggested actions, Google may also allow users to access the button for a variety of tasks, such as drafting email replies, altering the tone of drafted responses, and even handling some non-email-related queries.
